What are ways that can help me decide on my future career?

I'm a sophomore in high school and I love watching anything anatomy on tv, but I'm confused on what I want to do. The things I'm interested in are a doctor, nurse, and surgeon. I want a way to weigh out my options and make sure I choose the best thing possible for my career.

Richard’s Answer

Volunteer at your local hospital or low-income clinic. Ask any physicians, PAs, nurses or other clinical providers if you can shadow them.

Try to get a feel of their daily life and whether it suits your skills / interests.

Rachel’s Answer

To be a physician you will spend a minimum of 11 years in school after high school versus 4 years to be a nurse. To be a surgeon, you would spend 13+ years in school. I would shadow surgeons, family practice docs, and nurses as much as possible while you are still in school to help make the decision for yourself about what role you would like to play in the healthcare field.

Marybeth’s Answer

Hi Madison!

It is difficult when you are a student to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. It can seem overwhelming. I can speak to nursing. There is a nursing shortage and in the coming years the shortage will be greater. I found as an MSN, the nursing career field has opened up over the years. I began my career in 1985. Since that time, I have worked at the bedside in critical care, worked as a medical editor, worked for the army in a war country, worked for department of state in a war country and now I work in support of the USAF Surgeon General as a Medical Program Manager. My suggestions include, whatever you decide to do ensure you are a life long learner and there is enough diversity in your chosen field to hold your interest. Physician, surgeon and nursing are all separate professional paths which intersect to assist patients achieve health.
