My wife is a very successful Medical assistant, so let me tell you what she did. First is the MA program in most states it is a two year program but if you do it full time you could complete in just over a year. Second is the Certifications, in my state all you MUST have is the MA license but there are several other certifications you can get for drawing blood etc. Get them all.
Second find a great Doctor with a growing practice. It took my wife a few years going from one practice to another to find the right fit for her, don't burn any bridges when leaving a practice because ALL Doctors talk to other Doctors. If you are not happy where you are at give a 3-4 week notice and work till the completion of the notice. Work hard and remember you are there for two reasons. 1. Taking care of your patients. 2. Making the Doctors job easier and getting him finished seeing his patients earlier. If you find the right practice and stick with it you can do very well in the field.
Finally consider not stopping after getting your MA degree. That is the one thing my wife wishes she had done. Getting a RN or LPN Degree can open up more doors for future growth. Some larger practices may even assist in the tuition costs if you are working there while studying.
