What is something a registered nurse hoped they had known before starting in that occupation ?

I'm currently in training for medical assisting and want to become a RN. I have allot of interest in this field for this occupation. I'm excited to learn more about the services they provide to help people. Just want to cover some concerns #nursing #healthcare

Linda’s Answer

I knew I would be working with all types of patients. I did not know that I would in some cases have to be a mediator, marriage counselor or a fraud reporter. This is a job that is extremely fulfilling. You will see and hear many things that will shock and surprise you. You will be giving people dignity in their last days and share in joy when people get a good report saying their cancer is gone. I wish I had known how attached I would become to some of my patients and how hard that can be when they are gone. I don't regret any of my experiences as I have grown or been taught many lessons by them all.

Tiffany’s Answer

I wish I would have known that sometimes my heart and Will was greater than the doctors I was working with or the parents or carers of children or elderly that come in or the amount of drugs given out being ridiculous. The amount of abuse and harm I saw in the system and the amount of neglect I saw in different parts of the country and to see the difference between private practice and state run facilities brings you into a new perspective on how you can treat your patients. You become a social worker, counselor and advocate when your a nurse and it will effect your home life so be prepared. Lovingly stated.
