It depends on what route you would like to take.
If you would like to own your own business, you will need to setup an LLC, find work (as stated by Gabriel), do your work well, and wait for word of mouth to take off which is the best way to win work. If you want to jump start incoming work, I would drop off your business cards to local businesses that hang them up/give them out, create a Facebook page, and post your business on Facebook Marketplace, NextDoor, and see how you can get on sites like Angie’s List.
If you are interested in working for a painting contractor, I would join your local union and/or start reaching out to local painting companies (residential and commercial). It’s always best if you know someone who works at one so see if you have any friends or friends of friends that can get you an “in”. Good luck!
