A real estate company will hire anyone with a real estate license if they think you'll be successful in selling property. If you're enthusiastic and willing to learn, most companies will give you an opportunity to work with them.

A Realtor is a real estate agent that is member of the National Association of Realtors and the state Realtor association. Most real estate agents/Realtors are paid by commissions only. That means you don't get paid until you close a real estate transaction. There is good money to be made selling real estate but an agent needs to be very good at working with people. Being friendly, outgoing and able to develop trust with people are very important. If you like to meet people and are a good leader you will do well in a sales career. A real estate agent has to be able to manage their time, finances and be able to face lots of disappointments as many transactions fall apart and people will change their minds or end up not being qualified a loan. Your income can go up and down as it takes 30-90 days or more to get paid on a sales transaction. If you love office work as I do, this job may not be for you. If you love meeting new people and promoting your business more than office work, then you may be a good fit for a sales job such as a Realtor.

If you decide you do have a personality that would do well in real estate sales you'll need to obtain a state real estate license. Once you obtain a license your state will most likely require you to take continuing education classes to renew your license later on. Many community colleges or adult schools offer classes to help you pass the real estate exam and meet continuing education requirements.

I was a real estate agent for 9 years. I am a quiet, shy type of person, certainly not the best personality for a real estate agent. I became an agent to break out of my shyness which did help. I found that I was better at the office/detail work of the job more than the sales side so I ended up working for a large mortgage company and today I am working for a large insurance company managing the updates and distribution of hundreds of retirement forms. I am thankful for the experience as a sales person and I appreciate and enjoy the "office job" that I now have. Being a salesperson for many years, I know what sales people need and I am using my skills in administration to support our sales department and their clients.

Finding what you're good at and doing what you really enjoy is critical to a successful career.

Frank recommends the following next steps:

If needed, take a Skills Accessment online quiz or check a college or the YMCA to take a career test. This will help you confirm what your strengths are.
Go to a job posting online site and enter in the items you like such as sales, office administration etc. See what comes up. See what the requirements are.
Do you need any special training? Take any classes you need to meet current job requirements for the positions you are interested in.

Today's realtor needs to be very versed in many social media applications where they will use creativity to capture a buyers and sellers interest. Post pictures, helpful hints, reminders, etc - not just sales related material.

You'll need to be very organized, a great listener and while you don't have to be aggressive, work to be assertive and trustworthy. Keep in mind that a seller's home is usually their most valuable and emotional asset so be compassionate. A buyer is making one of the biggest investments of their lives so be patient.

Try to come up with a catchy phrase that ties your name into the real estate field. This will give you name recognition in a field that is filled with competition. All of these things will help you become a great realtor.
