Hi Adriana,
This is a great question! When we interview individuals for building maintenance positions we look for experience and aptitude. Experience isn't just work experience for those new to the work force. For example, have you done any maintenance or worked on cars, bicycles or other pieces of equipment. Do you have a good understanding of different tools and what they are used for? Have you done any DIY (do it yourself) projects? Do you have any licenses? Some licenses you can get relatively easily online. Others you have to attend classes. In your current studies, have you worked on any projects? If you have I would present what the project was, what you learned from it and what you liked.
For those new to the industry our focus would be primarily on aptitude. Any task can be trained, but even the most experience person will fail if they don't have the right aptitude/attitude. For example if a person prefers working on computer tasks, the building engineer role probably isn't best suited for them. However, if you like working with your hands and understanding how things work, then it might. With that said, building engineer and maintenance roles are evolving with technology and many tasks are automated through controls.
There are different trades schools if you are interested. HVAC quickly comes to mind and I believe there is a great school in the Phoenix area if that interests you.
BOMA or Building Owners and Managers Association might have a local chapter near you. You might consider calling them up and asking if there is someone they recommend in the field that you could have an informational interview with. Come with good questions written out and don't be afraid to ask follow up questions! If they offer you a tour of a building, jump on it!
Best of luck to you!
