Like nearly all engineering careers, having a genuine enjoyment and interest of math and science is key. During your years in public school, you will want to take as many courses in math (basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus) and science (earth sciences, chemistry, physics). Any other courses that put you hands on with the application of these subjects such as wood working, drafting, mechanics, robotics, and so forth will also be a plus.
Once you have graduated from high school, there are several ways to continue. The fast track is to enter an ABET accredited college and take courses leading to an Electrical Engineering degree (BS or MS). You can also take a vocational direction by taking CAD courses or electrical tech degree which you can then turn into an electrical engineering degree down the road.
Either way, while you're in school, look into joining IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) where you will be able to socialize with older experienced engineers who can mentor and guide you. You can also work summers as an intern at engineering firms to give you real world experience during this time. Your networking at IEEE functions can facilitate this. Near the end of your schooling you would need to take the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) test in whatever state you live in. After graduating and working for a firm that has licensed engineers on staff, you will be qualified to take the PE (Professional Engineers) exam after 4 years. That license will land you in the sweet spot of your career where you will be able to do interesting and exciting projects that lead to more and more possibilities.
