What is a typical day like being a Heating and Cooling Mechanic? (HVAC)

My name is Christa and I am 19 years old. I am looking to see what type of job would most fit me and my skills. I want to know more about the routine of a Heating and Cooling Mechanic (HVAC) to have more or less of an idea of what it might be like. I am currently enrolled in Job Corps to learn trade skills, but so far HVAC has been the one that I am most interested in. I have a high school diploma and currently serve in the Military Reserves as a Culinary Specialist (92G). I am looking forward to gain skills and experience in order to be able to find a job the best suits me. #job #career #engineering

As an HVAC Mechanic you will likely start out working for a company. Generally the company will assign you a partner and together you'll be assigned a work truck or van with equipment. Every day you'll start out at the office, and then you and your partner will drive to the assignment for the day. The job might be as small as going to a person's home to change a filter and check for maintenance needs that takes under an hour. The job might be as large new construction or full renovation of a housing development, office building, or apartment complex which takes multiple days. You and your partner will be responsible to make sure you have the equipment stocked in the truck for the day's work. It's nice that there is variety to the work, but it can also be a hot or messy job. You may have to work on a roof in the summer or in a crawl space. However it's skilled labor that is always in demand and can be a very rewarding career.

Hi Christa, I used to support HVAC technicians that went into customer's homes to fix their refrigerators or HVAC units. I work in Human Resources and hired HVAC technicians. We always looked for a couple of things, no matter how much experience they had. The first is being curious and a student of the business. Appliances and HVAC units continue to become more complex and it's important to stay on top of technology, learn and grow. Secondly, having a customer service skills are essential in this field as you balance 'fixing things' with 'taking care of the customer'; which involves being able to explain technical things to non-technical people, explain warranties or other services, starting the service call, taking payment and any next steps that may be involved. The last items is someone who pays attention to details and organized.

As a HVAC technician, you'll need to keep parts on hand and organized, have your tools ready to use and plan for your day in order to be safe and productive. Good luck in your professional journey!

Hi Christa, after completing my 2 year degree I entered a residential/commercial HVAC company. I trained with someone on the paperwork for about 2 weeks then I was given a van and out to service calls on my own from there on out. In the summer you did of course lots of ac calls including filter changes, blower motors, and refrigerant issues with condensers, compressor and condenser motors were a big one as well. Then in the winter had a lot of furnace calls.
However, if you like working on your own going house to house it is a good option.
This is opportunity to move around in the field as well.
