40 hours but that is changing pending on your career. If you are on hourly basis you would qualify for overtime after 40 hours per week.

Hi Hayden,

Appreciate the kind of query coming from school student to plan your future.

In a typical scenario, 8 hours per day or 40 hours in a week would be considered as a normal work hours as per the law.

The hours that surgeons work are highly variable. During training, they work 80 hours a week as residents. After graduation, they have the ability to make their own schedule and determine how many hours a week they want to work. Typically, surgeons work 40-60 hours per week.

Jesus G’s Answer

Hi Hayden!

Most careers that require Medical School will have you working 45hrs to 50hrs a week at the minimum. When you start your residency, which is pretty much a probational period before you're an official doctor, you'll likely be working more than this because you're trying to learn as much as you can. As a nurse, you'll probably be working 50hrs minimum per week, Salary, which means no overtime. It depends on what kind of Nurse you want to specialize in too. Some nursing professions only require a 2 year community college degree. For those you're looking to be working at least 40 hrs per week with some over time added to that since you won't be salary based. Hope this helps!

Richard’s Answer

I am a radiologist. I work about 50 hours per week. My hours vary as my group provides 24/7 service. Twice a year I work a week of night shift; and twice a year, I work a week of evening shifts from 4-11 pm. Some radiologists work in outpatient centers and can have more regular hours.
