Kitty’s Answer

Good afternoon!

Teaching is an amazing profession, I come from a long line of teachers. I also wanted to be an educator and went to college with that mindset. In college you are given the opportunity to student teach and this is where I really "knew" what I wanted to do with my life. Teaching wasn't for me but being able to have that experience with kiddos one-on-one in the classroom is key. I would recommend volunteering at camps this summer for kiddos and spend time interacting with all ages. I am the only non-teacher in my family, so I have so much respect for them. Hang in there. Follow your dreams and have fun exploring education.
Thank you comment icon Hi Kitty, your response does not directly answer the student's question. They were curious about what a typical day of teaching entails. Any insight you can share from your student teacher experience would be helpful! Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Barbara’s Answer

My husband became an elementary school teacher in New York City, NY as a second career. As a teacher, you impact the lives of each student in each of your classes. A teacher plans lessons for the week, collaborates and plans with other teachers during the school week, gives lessons to students while assessing student knowledge, differentiates the lessons and assessments to meet the needs of all students, and attends professional development sessions to increase their knowledge of the teaching craft and their content knowledge. Teaching is a very rewarding career. My husband has been a NYC school teacher for 14 years. He often sees students that were in his classes several years ago who have fond memories of being in his class and there have been several parents who have told him about the impact he had on their children's lives.

Barbara recommends the following next steps:

A next step could be to speak with some of your teachers in your current school and in schools you previously attended to ask them why they wanted to become a teacher and what a typical day is for them. Ask them what they like most and what they like least about being a teacher.
