Hey Erick! My aunt, who is a veterinarian, gave me some great advice for newcomers. She said that you should volunteer at an animal shelter during your off time because while not 100% reflective of reality, it gives you some insight into the daily emotional and physical struggles you will need to face.
There, you will be subjected to many topics and will have a chance to speak with currently practicing veterinarians to ask questions about the profession. I've always found that volunteer and charity work in a field of interest gives the best level of insight. The first step is always to discover if this is the correct field for you by interviewing those already doing it.
As far as "stepping up", it depends what you mean. I guess the same rule applies: take on additional projects, charity work and network with professionals in different disciplines (veterinary surgery vs. veterinary care).
