Hi Jaylyn,

Compensation will certainly depend on the size of the company, area of accounting you intend on pursuing, and level in which you are at. It's great that you take pride in your work ethic and I am sure you can use it toward accelerating your career. I would suggest researching some positions you think you would be interested in. Typically a position will list its compensation or have a range of what professionals in the field make.

Morgan’s Answer

Compensation would depend on the location you are in (e.g. accountants in metropolitan areas typically make more than those who hold the same positions in suburb areas, due to higher cost of living in metropolitan areas). It also depends on the specific industry you are in (e.g. there are public accountants, and accountants who work for private companies). As a benchmark, a first year public accountant who works in the audit field at a Big Four company in New York City makes around $55,000 - $65,000 a year.

Michael’s Answer

Hi Jaylyn,

As mentioned, compensation will vary greatly depending things such as experience, credentials, location (jobs typically pay relative to the cost of living in the area), and what path you pursue within the accounting profession. If you are interested in learning more about specific salaries based on different companies/criteria, I would recommend checking out Glassdoor or a similar site where employees confidentially share their compensation and benefits.

Best,
Mike
