Hi Victor,
I always love mechanical engineering as most of applications of mechanical engineering we see around. You should be good with physics and maths and problem solving skills. There are design courses available. Mechatronics is combinations of electrical and mechanical engineering so you will also need prepare for electrical engineering also.

For mechanical engineering, few requisites are good mathematics and physics background. Plus depending upon the specialisation, you can choose many other topics - just do some google searches. These days, most of the activities are now handled with computer, like CAD/CAM/CAE (Computer Aided Design/Manufacturing/Engineering), solid understanding of some the Tools will be essential once you have foundational understanding of mechanical engineering, possibly after 2nd or 3rd year. The newer concept is now 3-D printing, even for this you need solid understanding of mechanical engineering is essential. Think about where you want to apply your mechanical engineering skills and specialise in those areas.
