Hello Selena,
There are many different paths that you can take in order to become a teacher. However, will focus on a traditional route. While completing a Bachelor's degree, you will have to specify the amount of time to observe others teaching in a classroom setting this will likely occur during the sophomore or junior year of your degree. It would be really great to get some experience in teaching prior to junior year in undergraduate. You could work for a daycare center or volunteer at a local school. Additionally, you will have to complete a student teaching experience in your senior year. As a student teacher, you will be assigned a cooperating teacher and you will be in their classroom full-time for a semester. You will learn how to apply the theories learned in your degree program.
During your student teaching experience, your cooperating teacher will begin the semester teaching all of the subjects/blocks then slowly give the student teacher all of the teaching responsibilities. Toward the end of the experience, the student teacher will slowly will give those responsibilities back to the cooperating teacher.

Expect a schedule similar to this
Week 1-2 Cooperating teacher teaches all subjects while student teacher helps and observes
Week 3-4 Student teacher plans and teaches one subject/block
Week 5-6 Student teacher plans and teaches 2 subjects/ 2 blocks
Week 6-7 Student teacher plans and teaches 3 subjects/3 blocks
Week 8-9 Student teacher teaches all subjects or blocks
Week 10-11 Student teacher teaches subjects/2 blocks
Week 12- 13 Student teacher teaches 1 subject/1 block
Week 14 Student teacher observes other teachers in the building, and assists with helping the cooperating teacher.

After completing your practicum, certification exams required for your state, and degree you will be able to join a fulfilling career as an educator. Good luck to you!

Trang’s Answer

I started my career as a teacher through a program called Teach For America, a program focused on placing teachers in the highest urban and rural areas of the US. Through this program, we had intense summer training before we started the academic year. During my first year teaching, I had classes to become certified. These classes met once a week and lasted for about 3 hours. At the end of the academic year, I had a teaching certificate. This is a non-traditional route to teaching.
