Hi Catherine,

The first thing I am going to suggest is to read the following web page:

https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/medical-coder/

It has a great deal of information for you especially the different types of Medical Coder positions there are. I think this may be your best place to see whether you want to complete your certification or get a degree.

I hope this year will help you Catherine. Good luck.

Carlos’s Answer

Hi Catherine,

Great Question! There are various routes that you can take to become a medical coder. First, you must choose which route you would like to take in terms of your education.

Option 1: Certification Programs (Can take up to two years).
- Focus on the career specific track (Medical Coding ).
Option 2: Formal Education (Bachelors or Masters - 4-5 years)
-Major in computer science or coding

Once you have decided on which form of education you would like to choose, you have to prepare to take the certification exam, which is needed to get your foot in the door.

In that time you may also want to get internship or shadowing experience to build up your resume.

Lastly, use your networking skills to assist you with landing the job!

Goodluck!
