Kelly’s Answer

I would say any time you have a strong interest in a field which makes you want to learn all that you can about is one great attribute. Passion for your job, a desire to learn and improve, ability to work well with others and being able to self reflect along the way are all good attributes and disciplines.

Camille’s Answer

I agree with Kelly's answer. A desire to learn and constantly improve is a great soft skill to have. Open communication, great listening skills and never being scared to ask questions will also be beneficial.

Richard’s Answer

Persistence.
There are plenty of reasons and plenty of opportunities to give up on the path to any career. But don’t give up. I take inspiration from the story of the failed Antarctic exploration by polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew as told in the book “Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.” Understanding their ability to overcome the incredible hardships and survive teaches me that humans can accomplish anything
Thank you comment icon Hi Richard, I don't think this answers the student's question around personal attributes that make someone successful in this field. Any ideas on attributions? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Kirby’s Answer

Passion will get you far in life. When working with patients (should you decide on becoming a dermatologist) or coworkers in any field, it is easy to tell who is showing up to work to do the bare minimum and who actually wants to be there. Even if your job isn't your passion or hobby per se, having a willingness to learn from others and a desire to always be improving are skills that will serve you at every stage of life. Start extracurriculars that you enjoy early on in your college career as they make great talking points in interviews as well as allowing you some break from classwork. As someone who graduated from Texas A&M, there is a wide variety of orgs and things to do so always be on the lookout for something you might enjoy. If medical school is the route you want to go, Emergency Care Team is a really fun org that teaches you a lot of really cool EMS skills and critical thinking that will aid you in medical school.
