Tazy’s Answer

Most colleges provide Dorm accommodation for the freshman , but generally it is not a compulsion. After taking suitable permissions , one can live outside college campus . Unless it is a security concern , colleges will provide option to stay outside college campus.

Tazy recommends the following next steps:

Best option would be to check on college websites/seniors to understand specific college's rules.
Thank you comment icon Hi Jaden, I would say the requirement can vary but agree to check with college website that you're interested in. From personal experience I would definitely recommend living in a dorm your first year. It's a great way to get familiar with the campus and meet more students. It's also an opportunity that you'll never get again! Laurel Waites

Richard’s Answer

Most private universities do require freshmen to live on-campus, but some public colleges do not. If you have a specific university in mind, you can find that information on their website. Regardless, however, there are a lot of advantages to living in dorms and it provides a lot of ways to make friends and build your social live in college.

Rachel’s Answer

This depends entirely on the school. It will be easy to research prior to selecting the university you attend. That being said, living on campus or in the dorms is not necessarily a bad experience. If the university requires you to live there, it is probably because there have been many students in the past who have benefited from the experience.

Mallory’s Answer

I know colleges have dorms available for freshmen, but I don't think you are required to live in them your freshmen year. However, I strongly recommend it. I was excited about college, but not necessarily the dorm part. I ended up living in a small studio dorm by myself, but everyone else on the floor was in the business school with me. Since we were all freshmen, a lot of us had the same classes (since we were working on the basic requirements). It was so great to immediately have that connection and a very easy way to make friends. We also would all go grab lunch or dinner together and then study. I wouldn't have had that same experience had I lived off campus. If it's feasible for you to live in a college dorm, I would highly recommend it!
