If you could start all over again would you change your career path in anyway? Why?

Is it worth it ? Is it something you actually enjoy doing? I know it’s not easy dealing with criminals and all that stuff. #college #criminal-justice

Hi Karyme,

This is a FANTASTIC question, and one you should ask of anyone whom is in a career you think is interesting or whom you know will give you a full, reflective response. It sounds like you're interested in criminal justice, and I can't speak to that field directly, since it's not what I chose. But I can say that most people in their teens and early 20s have the idea that they better pick a field that's worthwhile so they can pick the best college major to go into that field. That's one way of looking at it, and it's valuable. But, the truth is, people change jobs and career tracks much more frequently now than they did even 30 years ago. So, studying what is interesting is always valuable. And it can lead to opportunities that you might not anticipate. Plenty of career tracks are not linear, meaning if you major in one thing, you'll won't likely end up doing just that one thing for the next 20 years.

Going back to your question here---what would change about my career path if I could start all over again---it would be this: I'd test my interests with more hands on experience in various fields. Not only would that have better informed my choices and my motivation for studying, but it would've built up my network more quickly and in more significant ways. Having ties to your community and to those who share your passion is so motivating and so worth it when looking for jobs down the road.

Good luck in your studies and all of your endeavors!

Jane

Hey Karyme,

If you are considering management and criminal justice, but you are uncertain which path is the right one for you starting with management will provide you with the competences you will need to strive success in any area of expertise. You will have time to adjust your career path considering your goals and timing. I have worked in different areas such as Finance, Real state and Data Analysis. I can say I’ve always focus on the common relevant industries where I’m based but adjusted to the circumstances and to what I could do best. How you commit to what you do is what will make the difference and will allow you to voice your perspective and to have an impact on your community. Volunteering and trainee programs will also assist you on determining what is meaningful to you and where you want to be. Considering the financial part, one thing that could help you is to be get familiar with the popular industries as per your location where the demand in higher then the offer. Hope in any way that was helpful. Best of luck!
