You really don’t have to and student loan debt is insane to pay off for most art schools (if you want to go into art) but it depends on what part of games you want to make. I say pick art or code but there’s so many other things you can do or make. Learn a free game engine like Unreal or Unity and find out how things are made and what part of it you would enjoy. Then find basic schools/online courses/YouTube tutorials that teach you those programs you need to learn to do the job. It will usually only be about three or four and you can start making things quickly.

Hello! Unfortunately I can only answer with the college I went to - but that's because I went there for the same reason! At Louisiana Tech University, there's a 4-year Computer Science program that requires you to have a concentration (basically, a computer science related minor). I took the Graphics and Game Design concentration, which includes two computer science classes on graphics and artificial intelligence, one math class on linear algebra, and one art class where you work in Unity to build a game. If I had attended any others, I would tell you more, but alas, I only had money for one school. That said, you're in Florida, so I suggest looking into Full Sail and seeing how their program appeals to you.

I don't think you have to go to a specific school, look at the schools around you but look specifically for Game Design Programs. I just search my local junior college and there is a Associates Degree for Game Design and Development.
What school do you want to go to or what schools are around you?
