Steven’s Answer
You will doubtless get different answers to this very subjective question. For me the most challenging part of being a dentist in private practice is managing the many details big and small of running a small business. And in this group the most stressful and frustrating part of this is dealing with insurance companies.

I'm not in the medical field, but several members of my family are. They constantly say that the most stressful part of their job is the uniqueness of each patient. This means that they can't have an "off-day". Since every patient has their own individualized programs / medical history / goals, the physicians need to always be alert and conscious and can never "coast" (no matter how tired / worn out they are). It's certainly a rewarding field, but does come with its downsides.

Can be stressful, especially when the patients have an incurable illness. After years of education and training the feeling of helplessness can be devastating.
