In the long run (so the experts say) the market will adjust so that the right number of people will be entering the field. However, in practice there are areas that have too many dentists practicing, and some that are underserved. Those areas with a surplus tend to be large relatively wealthy urban areas; those that are underserved are poor urban and rural areas.

As to physicians, as the population ages, there may not be enough physicians to care for the increasingly ill population, particularly in the smaller cities and towns.
