Patricia’s Answer

As a general dentist, upon graduation one l can work at an established dental office as an associate. A dentist can take on a practice and become the owner if the current dentist is interested in retirement. There are multiple scenarios for partnerships but dentist can decide to go solo right from the beginning. This is a private practice scenario.

Dentists also work for big corporation dental groups. This setting is for a person that is fast "producer " as commission is a big incentive.
Dentists work for the military, correctional centers, the VA and at community health centers and at educational institutions (training other dentists who recently graduated or while they still are in school)
It usually takes some time after graduating to find a niche.
Good luck!

I live in a medium sized city in Texas with a population of about 200,000 people. The general dentists in our community are very busy and have great practices. Many have joined groups so that they share business expenses such are office rent and staff salaries. In addition, they can pool resources for electronic medical records and expensive office equipment along with human resource personnel. Many still maintain their own private, single provider practices. The community in which you choose to practice will determine the opportunities available. Good luck!
