Hi Ave,

Having a job isn't too different from being in school. You'll have to show up on time and be there for regular hours. You'll have tasks to accomplish and your boss, like your teachers, will want to know you're doing your best and completing your work. You may have friends at work, much like having friends in school. You may have people you don't like at work, much like having people you don't like at school. There will be parts you will not like as much as you like other parts. The BIG different between going to school and having a job is that you get PAID for going to work!

Getting your first job can feel scary because it is different and you aren't sure what it will be like, or how to find a good job. Try to view it as an adventure that will have a great ending (you get to feel independent and you get PAID for your work!).

Jeanne recommends the following next steps:

Go to your school counselor's office and ask how people get their first jobs out of high school.
Ask your friends how they got their jobs and what tips they might give you. Ask them what a typical day is like at their jobs.

Robert’s Answer

Any job can be stressful at times, but doing a good job and helping other people can also be rewarding. It is important to find a good balance between work and your life outside of work to minimize stress. It is also important to work on your skills so you can work smarter, not harder. If you get more organized, or communicate more effectively, or learn how to better leverage other resources you can minimize stress in your job.
