If you know someone that likes to work on cars, ask them if you can help out. Work on the vehicles of friends and family. Get a project vehicle. See what schools in the area offer degrees in Automotive Technology. Work on getting ASE-certified. Take the tests even if you haven't got all the experience yet. (School can count as one year of the experience.)

You can pick an aspect and try to gain knowledge on that. For eg: crash test simulation softwares to check the cars' ability to withstand unprecedented situations or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to simulate the air flow over the cars' body contours to maximize its speed....

The answers provided below are very good ideas and insights. I would add that you should also think about what this industry is going to look like in the next 5,10,15 years. People will be driving more electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, maybe other alternative fuels as well. You will want to develop your skill sets to be able to grow and thrive in those new environments. You will need to be open to constantly learning new things and new technologies so you can better prepare yourself for the new automotive markets that are coming.
