I’m a mental health counselor who works with children in foster care and/or guardian care. It is very difficult hearing the children’s stories. It is awful and heartbreaking. I hear the aftermath. I could not be a child protection investigator. It would break my heart. But some people can!! I believe DCF’s website has a video on what the job entails, as a heads up it’s hard to watch. But it filters out those who cannot do it. Maybe YouTube has the video also. Also Removed is an excellent video to watch on YouTube. I highly recommend watching Removed.

However, it is so rewarding to be a bright light in their life, as a mental health counselor. I get to have fun with them, help them express the anger and pain, build their confidence and be a good role model. It’s emotional but the facts are the past is the past, what can we do to influence their future?

This job impacts my life daily. Good and bad. I’m always learning. People thank me for my help but I’m honestly so grateful and honored that they share their stories and trust me. It’s amazing.

I agree with everything that was previously said. I will also add that as a parent of young kids, I could not stomach doing that specific job now as a parent. I am also a mental health licensed counselor and it can be such a rewarding career. I just caution you, that many people work in it for a few years and then branch outward. The field of psychology eats their young. Those that make it through those first few years in tough lines of work like what you are interested in, typically go into management or private practice soonafter.
