What should I minor in?

I am a paralegal studies major and a pre-law student. My future plans are to work for the government, maybe work my way up to a district attorney. I don't want a broad minor such as history, english, political science...etc #law #major #law-enforcement #college-major #lawyer

The "Government" deals in many things. Real estate acquisition for development, urban planning, providing various social services, trying to figure out cost effective programs that will be successful, disgruntled employees, defending EEOC charges, contracts, and much more that I don't even know about!

My thoughts would be to get really good at understanding numbers. It seems everyone is into data analytics these days. A lot also revolves around budgets. Is there a Public Finance or Public Administration minor?

Thank you comment icon No there is not a Public Finance or Public Administration minor! The thing is I'm HORRIBLE with math. I want to deal with more of the criminal aspect of law. I wouldn't be opposed to double majoring either. Mackenzie
Thank you comment icon Criminal? Like, Embezzlement and Money Laundering? Please don't run from that which you are weak in. I did that. Steered clear of public speaking for 29 years. Once I started doing it, I found I enjoyed it! Math is everywhere. For example, in all the variables of a vehicle manslaughter charge: stopping distance, visibility, tire tread depth, type and age of road surface, brake pad thickness, etc. I encourage you to choose a 2nd major that will give you a solid skillset, rather than just teach you to think about why people commit crimes, reducing recidivism, etc. I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone. Bio-chemistry? Have you seen the illegal drug lists? Business Mgt? There are many majors that can give you a knowledge base that will be useful in criminal law! Kim Igleheart

Jessica’s Answer

It doesn't matter - it's more important to get the best grades you can get. Something like rhetoric or writing or philosophy will help with learning to write and argue, if you really want to pick a major.

Jessica recommends the following next steps:

Get the best grades you can as it's hard to get into law school.

Minors really don't impact future employment so study something you find very interesting and would enjoy learning more about. Use it as self growth within the drudgery of core classes.
