Estelle’s Answer

Some cases are very difficult, and surgical complications are inevitable. The important thing is to be the absolute best that you can in your job and ask for help when necessary. Taking call is another aspect of my job that is hard. Sometimes physicians feel like they can't break away from their work because they worry about patients even when they are not at work.

Suzanne’s Answer

Hello Mariana,

I am sorry this answer is so delayed. Like many other professions, there can be many frustrations within the practice of nursing. Personally, I found that dealing with insurance carriers to be what I disliked the most.

I believe that the underlying premise of our current insurance industry is to provide the least amount of care to many individuals. This is a way of controlling the costs of healthcare. Until our government comes to grips with healthcare insurance, I am afraid that insurance carriers will continue to parse the care provided to real people. You may have even experienced this in your own life.

As example: I took care of a cancer patient several years ago who was offered a cutting edge oral drug for his type of cancer. When the doctor told him what the monthly cost would be (even though insurance provided partial payment), the patient said, and I quote, "I will not put my family into a financial bind. I elect to go home and die from this disease".

If you look through the news, you will find, sadly, many other similar stories.

I hope you find this answer helpful.
