Are you talking about Baby Boomers? Lots!

That is one of the biggest challenges in the workplace today - all the different generations working side by side. You have to find a way to get along with them. They (we) have to find a way to get along with you. Believe me, it's not easy for us either! The key is to understand where we come from, and why we are the way we are. (I can explain this if you want me to.) Then, try to find a common ground. For example, perhaps they have a 15 year old grandson and don't know what to get him for his birthday! You would be the ideal gift consultant. Or, maybe it's sports. Lots of people can talk sports- across all the generations.

When you look for differences, it will divide you even more. Try to find the common ground. No, it's not easy. If "We" are being "disrespectful" towards you, it's because we have a bad attitude too. Once you prove that you can do the job, and are a part of the team, that will change. Granted, you should not have to prove yourself to your coworkers, but, hey, that's kind of how it works. And, when you become the senior employee, and the new hire is a Boomer, now the Boomer will need to impress you. Sometimes it's not about age, it's about seniority on the job.

My experience over the years has been that most certainly you will have co-workers that will make you wonder how it is they work for the same company but I believe that you have to remember that is on that individual. How you choose to deal with that person is on you! As long as you are respectful and a team player then their actions are on them. My motto has always been treat others as you wish to be treated! And when all else fails treat them with kindness and a smile! :)

Stacy’s Answer

I agree with many of the answers above. Throughout life you will work with many different people. Some will be easy to work with and some more difficult. Companies often have a wide age range of employees with many different personality types. Remaining positive and actively focusing on similarities instead of differences will help. Hopefully you will find a company that is a harmonious work environment. Just remember if you happen to find a job in a more challenging environment sometimes different personalities compliment each other. You may find that you learn a lot of life lessons and improve your own relationship skills. I wish you the best in your career selection!

You will be working with a diverse crew of people for the rest of your life and you won't always like everyone and they won't always like you. You will just have to be the most positive type of person you can be and be professional and helpful to all. You can't always pick your co-workers, unfortunately.
