Lecia’s Answer
Hi Danna, I am not a plastic surgeon but did practice with a group of head and neck reconstructive plastic surgeons in my career from 2005 to 2009. One thing that was particularly challenging was late diagnosis of head and neck cancers d/t patient lack of awareness of symptoms and sometimes reimbursement problems d/t inadequate or lack of insurance. This particular practice treated everyone needing this specialty care for a large rural region of a state. One thing to remember plastic surgery has many subspecialties but during medical school you can rotate to various clinical opportunities to determine your best fit into this profession. Remember too, that once you complete basic medical school, you will need to do a residency and likely a fellowship in the area of plastic surgery you want to do to ensure success in this career and to obtain board certification. Best wishes!
