Evan’s Answer

The salary usually depends on the standard of living in the area where you work. In addition to being a staff nurse there are different options you can pursue when you have nursing experience. Two of those options that pay a higher salary are travel nursing and per diem nursing.

In travel nursing you sign a contract to work with a hospital for a specific amount of time (usually 13 weeks). In addition to an hourly rate you receive a housing stipend and living stipend. As an example in the Washington DC region the housing stipend is ~ $3,000 per month and the living stipend is ~$1,000 with an hourly rate of $20-$30/hr. You can also take the housing the travel nursing company provides instead of the housing stipend. You will need to work with a travel company to get these contracts and will have to sign a new contract every 13 weeks, but it is a good way to experience different hospitals and parts of the country,

In addition per diem nursing is a good way to supplement your normal job or work part time in nursing that pay usually a higher rate. For example in the Washington DC region the hourly pay for a per diem job is $50/hr, which is $10-$20/hr higher than staff nursing rates. In this job you give a company the days you have available to work and the hospital will contact you if there is a need to work that day.
