Hello! I work for the automotive industry. What I like more about my job is that I get to experience the technologies that will be implemented in the vehicles. A year before I graduated, I started looking for places I could do my internships, and did so at a technical center. To put it simple, Technical centers are a place where you concentrate everyone you need to make a product feasible, for instance, you may have your drafters or architects that come up with an innovative design idea turned into a concept, and you have engineers that make that concept into a design: electrical, software, mechanical engineers and such, you have a team that makes the design come to life. You will also have experts that specialize in materials, paints, adhesives... You have labs to test prototypes and test actual parts...
My time in this technical center was enriching, I got to learn the process of a design before it is sent out for production, which is where we enter manufacturing.
I also got to experience being in a manufacturing plant, where everything is fast paced, but gives you the opportunity to see how thing are built. I got to see a final product before it was shipped out to the customer for installation.
If you ever get the opportunity for a class field trip to a manufacturing plant, I suggest you do so. I am not sure if your school may be able to schedule one for a group of students.
Also, if you have any acquaintances that work in the automotive industry, you may also try and reach out. Many of the people I know that work in the automotive industry are more than happy to talk about their own experience.
If you do not know what exactly you would like to do, don't worry. I suggest you look up several automotive companies, and their suppliers, maybe through LinkedIn, and search for job openings. This may give you an idea of what background and experience they are looking for and what may fit your interest.
You may find out that you do not have to be an engineer to be in automotive. The positions range widely, from marketing, HR, administration, accounting, legal, sales, and such.
Don't be afraid to take a career in a field that interests you, in the end, with enough information on your hands, you will be able to make the decision of what is best for YOU!
