In my chosen occupation I feel I have accomplished something special if every individual working on, supplying on or visiting on my job site goes home after an 8 or 12-hr shift in the same or better condition then they came to work. I do not like accidents and feel if one occurs on my site I did something wrong. So to be a good safety person one needs to walk-around their project site and ensure there are safe access to and from all work site, all ladders are properly setup and used, fall protection measures are in place to ensure no one hit ground, scaffolds are erected properly and inspected daily, proper shoring is in place on all excavations. Lastly that everyone on my site is in the proper PPE for the site.
I'd rather yell and scream at workers to do it right then to tell family members their loved one will not be home. I have done that enough in my career.

I would like to share few reminiscences of my short stint of a career as an electrical site engineer in one of the renowned construction company in our Country (India).
What do/did I like about the job?
a) Practical knowledge - excellent opportunity to practice few (if not all) of the concepts, math, statistics, etc on field
b) Collaboration - work hand in hand with other folks like Civil engineers, Mechanical engineers (plumbing teams), Masons etc
c) Improvisation - you come across unique challenges day in & day out and this provides an excellent opportunity to improvise and better ourselves as a continuous process
What do/did I not like about the job?
a) Hygiene - the construction sites are unhygienic and there are chances of contracting contagious infections
b) Physically demanding - this is not a typical office job where you sit in an office chair under the AC for 9 hours and logout. You need to keep on wandering across the site (especially when there are multiple towers/blocks of buildings in the project site). I remember i had days where i was not even able to sit for few minutes.
c) Risk factor - since the construction sites are dynamic with heavy equipment, live power lines, over head debris, etc you never know what might happen to you or your colleagues on site and hence it requires 100% alertness while carrying out the job
What do/did I do on a daily basis?
a) Making sure the work quality is adhering to the Quality control factors mentioned in the work order.
b) Warehouse management - you need to take stock of the working materials on a regular basis and need to make sure you have healthy supply of materials and tools at all time. Maintaining a ledger with valid bills for every purchase made or else you would be in trouble during the audit.
c) Workforce Management - Making sure you have sufficient workforce each day, attendance, checking the safety of the employees (whether they are wearing the helmets, have safety shoes, jacket etc)
d) Drawing Analysis, Giving proper instructions to the employees, making sure the drawings are accurate before starting the work, proper placement of conduits & cables, electrical boxes, junction boxes before & during the concrete laying process.
e) Checklist of the work progress etc
I hope you find these points useful.
Thanks & Regards,
Arun S
