Bob’s Answer

Do you have to college to become a photographer? The short answer is no. There are many self taught photographers in the field today that do extremely well in the field. Perhaps an extension of this would be 'Do I need training and education to be come a photographer?" Here the answer would be Yes. There are many phases of photography that take more than just an artistic eye. Examples include not only the technical side of photography itself, but business relating education such as finance and marketing. Would college help ? Yes, based on the nature of the program and how well it is tailored to the real life needs of a photographer. Can you become successful just by picking up a camera and shooting to make a living? Very difficult road to travel.

Bob recommends the following next steps:

I would suggest watching well established on-line teaching programs such a CreativeLive
I would investigate college programs in photography- how well are they tailored to setting up a business into photography?
I would seek out fellow experienced photographers in your area, possibly ask if you can do share days.

Steve’s Answer

Not necessarily. You would have to build a portfolio and I would recommend getting some accolades in parties, weddings, engagement photos etc. Good luck!
