This depends on the type of construction you are looking to do, but from an HR perspective you can look at OSHA. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements are set by statute, standards and regulations. OSHA's website at http://www.osha.gov.

You should also look at the safety history of the company. If there have been many on the job accidents, that should give you insight as to how hard the foreman pressures people to work and what concerns they have towards the safety of their employees. Also look into the type of construction. Road work vs building work can be night and day on your back. Having to pour 130 yards of cement on a hot day vs working on a vertical high-rise plays an entirely different toll on your body. Construction companies specialize in types of jobs so look into they types of projects they have done.

Lastly, learn to operate heavy equipment. You are the last to get laid off and the job is sitting in a chair most of the time, protected from the elements.
