Leslie’s Answer
I am the owner of a small animal hospital outside of Chicago. I am a sole practioner meaning I am the only full time vet at the practice. I have a permanent part time vet who works 1-2 days a week. I work 50-60 hours weekly between patient load and administrative care. It's a lot of work but worth it as I am in charge of what happens at the hospital. The practice pays for my health insurance, my professional insurance and my car. I also have vacation, retirement and continuing education benefits. If you are interested in veterinary medicine I would recommend volunteering at a practice to see how the work flow goes.
