The majority of people in my company obtain their full time offer once they complete their internship. An internship is a great way to not only get your foot in the door but it also enables you to get a better idea of what your day to day will look like in that profession with that company.

Aside from financial planning now being a major at colleges and universities (it was not at the time I entered the industry). Internships are a huge component of getting a permanent position. It is hands on experience in your resume which is extremely valuable (paid or not). Any time of volunteer work you can do that is related to the field also helps. Again it shows drive, determination and commitment which are great qualities in any employee.
