Arvind’s Answer

Copywriters can advance into specialist creative authors and directors. In some cases they can also move into product marketing roles based on their domain knowledge. There are also opportunity to move into mainstream marketing roles in some cases.

I believe the “typical” advancement and career path for a copywriter is at an advertising agency. You will gain lots of experience and learning from senior copywriters who are writing and presenting print & television copy, jingles and internet copywriting (not sure if the term is E-commerce copywriting). If you don’t have a lot of experience just yet but truly want to follow this path, my suggestion would be to apply for an entry level position at a large ad agency with many diverse clients. Even if you are working in the production, media or account management departments, you will be exposed to all of the players within the agency. It may not be the work you truly want to do but you will be working with the people who make these decisions. Even a mailroom attendence at an ad agency gives you face-to-face with high level execs. Once you’re in, do the best job you possibly can in that department, let you manager know your future goals and get to know the copywriting department well Once you have been there for a few months, by email, ask the head of the copywriting department to have a brief informational meeting with you and let him/her know your interest in this field Find our what the steps would be to land a position in the department This will show your initiative and your intentions Eventually if you become a copywriter and are successful, you can always freelance if you have a good networking base

Tonya’s Answer

I thought I always wanted to be in advertising. I had a interest in writing, so I thought Copywriting would be a great way to get into advertising...and it was. But, copywriting doesn't pay a whole lot, so I worked my way into Assistant Creative Director, Media Buyer and finally into account management at the same advertising agency. It was a smallish agency in Pennsylvania, so I was able to do all of them...what a great experience! Now I am a Sr. Client Account Manager for Verizon. I actually parlayed my experience creating advertising for telecommunications companies into getting a jog as an Account Manager for, what was them, Bell Atlantic.
My advice...Professional, persuasive writing is needed in any vocation. Copywriting is selling with words. You have to know your audience, understand their needs/wants, determine how your product/service can meet those needs/wants, and understand what will persuade them to do business with you. Good luck with your writing - no matter what industry you finally end up in!

Tonya recommends the following next steps:

Try to get an internship with a local ad agency, radio station, online marketing firm, or other media outlet
Read and listen to ads. Who do you think they are trying to reach. Which ads motivate you to act and why?
