It had a lot to do with hard work, timing and networking. I worked my way up. This large company had a small Sales Promotion department which consisted of 5 people. We all had our hands in every aspect of the department; like producing sales promotion materials, developing agendas, speaker support and events for company wide sales meetings. Our department interfaces with so many departments so I got my name and face out there. Once people got to know me and my capabilities then I was considered for promotions and positions in neighboring departments. I had to pay my dues in lesser roles but would never have been given the manager opportunity without these steps. Be patient.
