Brittany’s Answer

Hi Farah,

For me, it took a lot of experimenting (in a relatively short amount of time) to decide what I was really interested in and frankly, good at. My career path is actually unrelated to what I majored in, in college. My advice is to really evaluate what you're interested in, how that applies to the workforce, and whether you can truly see yourself being interested enough in that subject to make it a career. Don't choose something that you dread or agonize the thought of, simply because it is high-paying. I feel as though that is the quickest path to burning out. That being said, be wary of the terms such as "starving-artist" - there's a reason for that (although exceptions do exist with hard work!). Also, leverage internships - they're a great way for you to gain experience as well as get an inside look at a career that you're interested in. Volunteering in a career-field (if that's an option) can also be super insightful.

I hope this helps!

Check Out This Helpful Career-Finding Resource: https://www.learnhowtobecome.org
Do your research
Think About What You Like, and How You Can Make It A Profitable Field
Find an internship (or volunteer) - it's all about getting your foot in the door
Evaluate the experience (do I like this career field in general? do I like this career field, but in a different position?)

Alex’s Answer

I didn't have an exact job I wanted when I was in college and just knew I liked finance/business and wanted to do something in that field. I would recommend doing at least one internship in an industry you may like to get a feel for it. I did an internship at a bank and then got a full time job with the same bank in a different department so it opened up many doors. Best piece of advice would be to narrow in on jobs that require skills you enjoy doing.

Jim’s Answer

There are a multitude of answers for this question, most folks would say the old fashioned, "do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." However, as a millennial myself, my truth was that i found myself working in a field completely unrelated to my schooling, due to the small amount of jobs available in my area. I would say if you are willing to move around the country, then yes follow you passion and chase the job you want to do wherever it may land you. If you want to stay near home i would do research into the largest employers in your area, what kind of work they do and what, within these businesses, may interest you personally. The good news is if you find yourself with steady work in a field that may not spark a passion in you, you can work towards your dream goals through online schooling and training while earning a livable wage.
