Hi, I agree with what Nija said in her response to you. I would add to work on internships in a field you might be interested in doing. The important thing about starting internships in your freshman year is that it allows you to do a different internship each semester. At the end of the internship decide what aspects of the job you liked and what you didn’t like. Knowing what you don’t want to do is just as important as knowing what you do want to do. If you list the type of work you like such as working in a office or dealing with people are useful things to know. Plus, at the end of four years you will have a killer resume.

Additionally, there are career test you can take to pinpoint areas of interest. My last piece of advice is not to panic, careers are never straight lines. Everyone’s path bend and turns on their journey. Follow your interests and they will lead you to who you are meant to be.

Nija’s Answer

Hi Maya,

I hope all is well. It seems like you are unable to declare a career and major. It is okay, this situation happens all of the time. You are not alone because there are others that are going through the same experience like you. If you are undecided about the what you want to do, perhaps you can major in Liberal Arts. Liberal Arts is a broad major, which gives you opportunities to take different courses such as psychology, sociology; english; computer; communication; business, health; human services; science and other courses. Maybe from the courses that you are taking, you may spark an interest in something. You can explore different avenues so you can discover your true desires. Think about what you enjoy doing. You can create a list and divide it into categories such as interests and strengths as you continue to explore these things on a daily basis. Also, you can write down things you could see yourself doing as a career. Take some time for yourself and learn more about yourself. Dream big; imagine yourself doing things that you like to do. If there is a job or hobby you are interested in, then you can volunteer or job shadow to see if it's an occupation you really want to do.

The most important thing to remember is to keep trying; explore your interests and hobbies. You must make decisions and try things even if you end up disliking it or wanting to do something else. It is never too late to start again.

Nija recommends the following next steps:

Explore your interests
Try new things to see if it would spark an interest
Volunteer or Job shadow
Consider majoring in Liberal Arts until you find your passion and until you declare a desired major

Don't stress yourself out! There is a good chance that even once you decide, down the road you may end up in a profession that is not super related to your degree. A LONG time ago I went to school for business with a concentration in marketing and am now happily in HR operations. My current job is not something I would have necessarily thought of or planned for while I was in college. Focusing on something more generic like business or communications will give you the foundation college provides with flexibility to go professionally in any number of directions. Best of luck to you!
