Not at all. The best way to learn or know more about anything, is to spend your spare time looking at how it works.
As a student, you have all the time in the world to figure out what you are passionate about. And the simplest way to learn that is spend time on it. That is all anyone has to do.
If you know someone in the family who works in a garage or owns a garage, just hang-out with them at the garage whenever you are free. (no cost involved too!)
A lot of innovations in automative are already out there. But if you have the passion for it, then you will master the basics of how each component works.
Do not overthink it. Just keep an open mind. And if you have the interest, you'll just love learning how cars work.
And how knows! you might just be the next innovator!
