Marco Antonio’s Answer

It would depend on the level of work you want to do, for sure there are plenty of people fixing cars without any formal education (self-learners). However I would say that technician formal education would be the minimum this programs usually go from 6months to 2 years max.

As mentioned if your expectation is to go beyond and join the automotive industry in a big company then higher education is needed such as a mechanical engineering degree.

Marco Antonio recommends the following next steps:

Evaluate your profile
Look for opportunities and list the requirements
Research formal programs to fill out those gaps

Mike’s Answer

To work at an automotive workshop the best place to start educationally would be a technical college in your area. They will most likely have programs for your specific career goal.

Mike recommends the following next steps:

Research Technical Education or Colleges with a location in mind.
