Medical office support can be very challenging. But medical support assistants, in all of their duties, are vital to the success of health systems. Medical office support personnel handle much of the administrative burdens of health care systems so physicians can tend to their patients. However, to answer your questions/concerns more specifically, it would be helpful to know if you have a specific office support function in mind. For example, medical office support can include those who manage practices overall, or aspects of a medical practice. Those who manage group practices may have advanced education and be compensated very well. Entry level medical support personnel may manage very specific activities and are paid according to their experience level. The location and specialty of the practice or set up can make a big difference in position responsibilities, workload and compensation.
As a group practice manager/health systems administrator, I really enjoy my role in medical support operations. I find it very fulfilling to take care of my providers and support staff so they can take care of our patients.
Research different roles associated with medical office management or administration. Research the roles and responsibilities of the different positions along with the experience or educational requirements.
Set up an informational interview or conversation with medical support/administrative staff for more clarity.

There are also various medical support-type roles in the business world. Something to consider - working in technology, research or sales.
