As a registered nurse, (RN) you can qualify for various types of nursing positions or even advanced practice nursing (APRN) jobs. You can pursue a Master's degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner which is different that a direct-care RN. Some nurses start out with their Bachelor's degree in nursing, work as a direct-care RN for a while, then return to school to become a nurse practitioner with a Master's degree. It is helpful and important to gain some direct-care nursing experience in an acute care setting to provide a foundation for being a Nurse Practitioner. As a registered nurse or a nurse practitioner, you can work in a variety of settings: acute care hospital, ambulatory care (clinics and outpatient), schools, businesses (occupational health), global health (international missions), rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities and more. You can specialize in specific areas such as, pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, orthopedics, medicine, surgery, operating room, primary care, cardiology, pulmonary, neurology and much more. After obtaining some experience as a nurse in a specialty area, you can often pursue nursing specialty certification that you can obtain to validate your expertise and increase your marketability. Later in your nursing career, an experienced nurse with an advanced degree can pursue leadership positions, executive nursing positions, research positions, safety and quality positions and much more.
