The time it take can vary depending on the route you decide is best for you.

The following are a few educational paths students can take toward becoming skilled radiology technicians with a competitive edge and high employability.

  • One-Year Certificate Program: These programs provide the basic training and tests required to achieve professional certification as a diagnostic medical sonographer. These programs do not include many opportunities for specialization, and will prepare students for entry-level work in the medical imaging field.
  • Associate’s Degree: Associate’s degrees can take anywhere from 18 months to two years, and usually offer some additional opportunities, such as management classes or the option to choose a specialty within radiography or diagnostic medical sonography. This degree is a solid foundation for a career in radiography, and some licensed radiology techs who were first educated in certificate programs may return to school to earn an associate’s degree after a year or two of working.
  • Bachelor’s Degree: The bachelor’s degree is a four-year program that will include advanced medical imaging materials and is optimal for people who want managerial or administrative careers related to radiology or sonography. Students who want to move into a different medical profession after working for a few years should also choose a bachelor’s degree.

Brittany recommends the following next steps:

Decide if you want a certificate (12mo), associate degree (18mo) or bachelors degree (4yrs).
Google search for the best programs according to if you want a certificate (12mo), associate degree (18mo) or bachelors degree (4yrs).
After reading through various program options, decide which you think will be the best for you.

Jennifer’s Answer

Although i am currently in a different career path. I previously researched degree programs and certification paths for radiology at Trade school in my area. There were lots of resources and institutions that offered course work. I first did a search on which schools specialize in radiology and how successful were their graduates in landing jobs after they finish school. To me, i wanted to go to a college/university that has very strong structure and have straight forward path to education. I narrowed down my choices to 2 schools and took a tour of each campus. I met with guidance counselors and also asked to visit a class in session. I also asked if i could contact recent graduates who are in the field to interview them on their experience. I was able to ask them about class experience, tuition costs, and how to best get through the program.

I felt prepared once i decided on which college to enroll in.

NOTE - in general , it is usually 2 years of coursework, but you can also accelerate the timeline and squeeze in classes if you can fit it into your schedule. You may have some per-requistes so plan ahead if you need to take classes in particular order. Also, ask your instructors during your first year on how to best apply for internships/mentorships in the future. Planning ahead and knowing what you need will motivate you to stay focus. Also, if you can find a radiologist mentor that would be helpful for guidance during your education.
