Paul K’s Answer

Sema J- the most challenging part of Facilities Management is living to a budget that was prepared with limited input from me, when I am the only one managing a data center with a directive given by someone who doesn't understand data centers tells you to cut the budget by 5%. This past year were asked to cut $100,000 out of my budget. Fortunately, we have less load this year so our electrical bills have been less,. we dropped form about 5 megawatts to about 3.8 megawatts. The powers are trying to run my site like an office building when it is a data center. Data Centers have some unique challenges. Unlike allot of buildings we install and pay for all whip installs. Most data centers the user pays. We got hit with a bunch of provisioning and my General manager hit me with a $14,000 electrical material bill. We re negotiated our landscaping and snow removal contract and this has saved us about $28K. I removed the interior plant maintenance contract. Al of our interior plants we removed and we no longer have interior plants. $6k savings. So you can see how management lead decisions, present challenges to us on the budget side. I also worry allot about keeping our data center operating at 100% Uptime when the equipment that keeps it up- is aging 16 years old now. Oh well-- i hope that helps you to better understand some of the challenges of FM. My i suggest IFMA.org as a good reference for you to learn more about the career of FM. Ok take care.
