Take studies and certifications as building blocks. You start stacking them, keep joining them and keep strengthening the structure by gaining knowledge. More knowledge you gain, stronger it gets.
To answer your question, "How to become a better mechanic?" I would like to advise that you need to:
1- Believe in yourself that you can become what you wish to become
2- Remove distraction that are taking chunk of your time. The time you could spend in gaining knowledge and experience.
3- Certification are good for yourself to assess where you are and what next you need to do. They will keep you on track and motivated.
4- Get working experiences from different places and on different technologies to broaden your skillset.
Hope this will help.
