Hi Adrian,
Welding positions require a high school diploma in addition to on-the-job training and technical training or certifications. There are a number of different ways to gain on-the-job and technical training including: 1) High school, 2) Your local community college, 3) Vocational school, 4) A branch of the military , 5) Training from a private welding company.

I would also recommend looking at as many YouTube videos as possible for different techniques and differences in welding tools. Of corse, nothing beats experience, so buy equipment as soon as you can and practice welding as much as possible.
