You should start with market research. How many shops are in your area, how much business do they have, and if there's room for one more. Then start looking at the business plan, where would you open it, what all do you need, and how will you finance it. This is a good starting place, but you'll figure things as you go. It might be helpful to get a mentor in your field to help you get started too. Nothing is impossible if you really set your mind to it.

Just like anything what was shared already is a good basic strategy. One thing to understand is that experience plays a key role in having a shop. Most successful shops that I know of have developed a following, meaning they have worked at a dealership and started an independent shop with those clients looking for a dealer alternative. Another method, would be starting a mobile mechanic business. That is potentially a lower cost of entry since you would need a van to store tools but all of the tools would need to be bought regardless. It may not be the best working condition since some jobs require a lift but it would mean you do not need to rent a shop. Also, sometimes you can rent a lift for a day at a shop that you form a partnership at for those type of bigger jobs. Just some alternatives since I have had experience working on cars and friends that own shops. Its not an easy business to fund right out of a trade school.
