Oliver’s Answer

If I could go back and do it all over again, yes I would absolutely pick the same field. When I started out I really didn't know what I wanted to do however. It took me time to get a feel for what I wanted to do and the field I wanted to be in.

I would say what has ultimately made me say I would pick the same field again is, I love what I do because I feel I am good at it. The field I am in is really my strength. I am still learning however and that doesn't stop, even when you are great at what you do! But I know I can do it well and it becomes enjoyable.

I feel often what you like doing, what you enjoy doing, is what you are good at! Everyone has something.

Joshua’s Answer

Absolutely. The only difference, I would have started down this career path sooner out of the military. That's why it's important to pick a path, focus and drive your way down it.

Brad’s Answer

Yes, if I could go back and do it all over again, I would pick the same field. Early on, I had to decide between emergency medicine and Information Technology (computers & programming). Both fields fascinated me. Emergency medicine was exciting, but IT was more stable and paid better. I've been in the IT field now for 35 years and its been very good to me.

When choosing a field, consider where you'll be 10 to 20 years down the road. Do you think you'll still be happy? Is it a field that you can continue doing equally well or better 20 or 30 years from now? Will it work well with having a family, being able to support and spend time with them?

The advice I gave my kids is "decide where you want to be, and then make the decisions that will get you there".

Le’s Answer

It depends on the field you go back is your want or your strength.

Case 1: if you like that field but it is not your strength, you can see how far you can go. I agree that you like that field and you want to improve it better when you are back. In that case you have to make sure that your desire is big enough to do it over again. Otherwise you will be stuck again at the point you are asking this question now.

Case 2: if that is your strength but you may not like it or you may not recognize your strength. I recommend that you should find other reason convincing you to continue your strength.

Let me tell you my story. When I was young I extremely hated to become a lecturer. Time went by, many kind of jobs from some different fields I worked on it and now I recognize teaching or coaching is my strength. I found the meaning of helping student when I give them an advice at the right time. Then I feel interested in that job. It will be great if you can recognize what you want and what your strength is. If any field can mix both of these, the answer is very easy, obviously yes you should do it.

Le recommends the following next steps:

Think about the path you can foresee for the next 2-5 years if you go back that field. Whether you are happy when you go back. Whether you feel satisfy with that field in terms of finance, interest, time, age. It takes time and money to get back one field. Consider it carefully.
